Altea is within comfortable driving distance of Alicante (45 minutes), Valencia (90 minutes) and Murcia (90 minutes) airports. If you don’t mind driving or maybe are able to get a good deal on a flight then Madrid or Barcelona (about 5 hours) are possibilities.
Alicante is the largest regional airport but also gets very busy in the peak holiday seasons. Valencia is smaller and is much more geared to scheduled flights so it can be a more civilised option in the summer peak months! We’ve never flown to Murcia but it is served from the UK mainly by flights out of Stansted.
Madrid is a major international airport and is generally always busy. As it is mainly a business destination it is sometimes possible to get cheap fares during holiday periods such as Christmas, when the airlines’ traditional business travelers are not flying. If you do fly to Madrid there are three terminals so remember which one you fly into!
Getting from the airport to Altea is best done by car. There are many local companies which have operations at all of the regional airports. You may like to try http://www.carjet.com for good deals on car rentals.
If you want to use local transport there is an express bus link from Alicante airport to Benidorm (then take a short hop on the local bus to Altea from Benidorm). Check the timetable at http://www.alsa.es/portal/site/Alsa
There is also a train service which runs from Alicante to Denia and serves Altea. This is a private small gauge railway with an hourly service between Alicante and Altea and less frequent onward trains to Denia. This is quite a fun way to travel as the train meanders along the coast but it takes about 90minutes and the connection to Alicante Airport is not so convenient. A pdf download of the timetable is available at www.fgvalicante.com
The railway station at Alicante is in on the Avenida de Villajoyosa on the West side of Alicante, near the sea front. Note: This is a separate station from the main railway station in the centre of Alicante where the RENFE national railway trains run from. You need to take a local bus from the airport to the station if you want to use the train service. The station at Altea is in on the main road about 500 metres from the town centre and the house. Alicante - Altea adult single costs approx €4.00
For the intrepid traveller (!!) Eurostar operates regular services from London to Paris with connections onward to Madrid and Barcelona traveling on the overnight Trainhotel services from Paris. The Euromed connects Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante. Barcelona to Alicante takes 4hr 45mins.
A taxi from Alicante airport to Altea costs about £40. There are generally plenty available at the airport but as with all major airports only use licensed taxis from the main taxi rank. We can arrange a pick up for smaller groups from the airport if required.
See the useful links page for ideas on cheap flights and car hire.
The photo above shows the swimming pool and facilities at the local Tennis Club which is 5 minutes from the house and can be used for a charge of just 3 euros per day.
